About the Program

The Summer Theatre Academy at the University of Miami offers a summer full of fun and learning!

STA is a day camp for students ages 6-15 who are interested in developing an appreciation of the performing arts. Started over thirty years ago, STA is part of the University of Miami’s Department of Theatre Arts and is managed by theater education professionals who teach year-round.

At STA, our focus is on each camper being as creative as they possibly can, and, in the process, developing an appreciation for the performing arts. Every group at STA writes scripts and performs them onstage or records them as short films, under the guidance of our teachers and counselors. Campers at STA spend their days acting, singing, dancing, and working on the visual storytelling aspects of existing pieces as well as their own material.

This approach, combined with small groups of no more than twenty students, allows us to provide individualized attention to each camper. At STA we prioritize creativity, process, and learning, over putting on the Ritz: STA days are divided into classes, each led by a teacher – a college student or young professional with experience in the specific discipline. In recent years, classes have included Acting, Music, Dance, Film, Playwriting, Improv, and Stagecraft. Each group attends each class multiple times a week, working on projects planned for their specific age group, and developing their own material. This structured schedule allows each student to be as involved in the creative process as they would like to be, and each summer at STA ends with a showcase of the campers’ work, where every student performs with their group, and families enjoy the outcome of the creative process.

For students going into eighth grade or higher, we also offer the Advanced Academy, in which students receive specialized intensive workshops that cover both the performing and technical aspects of theater.

STA campers gain valuable theatre skills, confidence, self-esteem, and a love of creativity, through theatre games and acting exercises led by our well-trained, caring staff. Whether in grade school, middle school or high school, our Academy provides students with a safe, fun, supportive place to learn and grow.
